Sensor, Image & Video Quality
The most obvious difference between the R5 and R6 is the sensor. The R5’s 45MP sensor allows it to gather a lot more data, making it great for large-scale printing, impressive cropping and jaw-dropping detail. The R6’s 20.1MP sensor might seem as though it pales in comparison, but on the contrary, this makes it excellent for fast-moving subjects, plenty of burst photography and lowlight shooting.

Body and Build
A key difference between the EOS R5 and the EOS R6 is the card compatibility. Both bodies have dual card slots and accept SD/SDHC/SDXC & UHS-II cards, but one of the R5’s slots is CFexpress Type B which perhaps indicates the difference in types of photography Canon is expecting each camera to be used for.
The R6 is lighter by about 50g as well, making this the better choice for handheld shooting. But both cameras have been designed with the mirrorless ethos: “Lighter is better”.

Do I need the R5 or the R6?
That depends on what you generally photograph. Take a look below:

|
What types of photography? |
Portraits, Corporate, Commercial, Architecture, Landscapes, Travel |
Sports, Wildlife, Action, Weddings, Events, Street, Lowlight |
Get this if… |
You need to value high image resolution where your subjects are generally slower-moving (say, a mountain, for example!) |
You need to value taking lots of photos over using the highest resolution possible. 20MP is plenty for all of these genres. |
Ready to take the leap?
