Sony FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS Lens - Key Features & Our Thoughts
An Innovative G Master F2.8 super-telephoto
Sony has been shaking the camera world by the shoulders recently, and they haven't stopped. This has been categorised as the most advanced lens Sony have produced, by using the best technology available. The Sony FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS Lens is able to achieve extraordinary speeds whilst still being able to get the famous G Master resolution and bokeh. Furthermore, this lens is the lightest super-telephoto lens in its class (Compared to 400mm F2.8 lenses for 35mm full-frame format cameras, as of June 2018, Sony survey.), providing unparalleled handheld shooting freedom!
Get speeds that maximise body performance
This lens has been equipped with new extreme dynamic linear motors, which allow the lens to deliver higher thrust than most conventional types. During testing, Sony achieved 5x improvement in the moving subject tracking tests. Two of these new motors and newly developed algorithms quietly drive the lens’s large focus lens group faster and more precisely than ever before. The full speed performance of advanced camera bodies can be applied to capturing dynamic sports or wildlife subjects.
Stunning G Master resolution and bokeh
Sony extremely high design standards will give you the confidence to go out and shoot, knowing you will get edge to edge performance with minimal chromatic aberration. Sony has tried to carefully control Spherical aberration during design and manufacture to achieve the highest possible bokeh quality. Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters are supported, providing outstanding resolution and contrast, even at 800mm.
The world’s lightest at just 2,895 grams (102.2 ounces)
Typically 400mm lenses no matter the brand, are big, heavy and sometimes cumbersome to use. But, Sony being Sony, have managed to create an f2.8 400mm lens that weighs less than 3KG! They have managed to do this by using a durable magnesium alloy and only using 3 fluorite elements at the front of the lens. As a result of these simple but highly effective methods, they have managed to create an outstanding portable and easy to handle lens with great balance. Furthermore, It's agile and very easy to operate, with or without a monopod.
Durability and reliability for challenging conditions
Because Sony has used a magnesium alloy for the lens barrel, exterior, tripod mount and even the interior barrel, they are able to create a tough, durable lens that is also dust and moisture resistant. What does this mean? You can rely on its performance in harsh outdoor conditions.
Effective professional shooting needs
Full-time DMF allows manual focus to be engaged simply by rotating the focus ring, even while shooting in AF-C mode. Optical image stabilization is built-in, and a new Mode 3 setting features an advanced algorithm that provides optimum stabilization for dynamic sports action while also making framing easier. Four focus hold buttons and a focus ring with Linear Response MF further enhance versatility.

Clifton Cameras Review of the Sony FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS Lens
As mentioned above, Sony really is shaking up the market and getting brands like Canon and Nikon to take note. This lens, I have to say, is pretty amazing! A 400mm f2.8 lens that weighs less than 6 pints of milk is pretty mind-blowing, and they've done a great job making it as durable as they can.
I always find 400mm the sort of lens that you can't help stop and stare at. The picture quality really shows off this lens potential, and combined with a Sony Alpha A9, irrelevant of your specialism (sports/motorsport photography) would pose a huge advantage! (As long as you have £15,000 spare that is. Good thing we do finance!) - Andi from Clifton Cameras.
