One of the main differences between the Mark I and Mark II is the weight. The GM2 weighs just 1045g which is approximately 30% lighter. This reduced weight, of around 400g, is vital when it comes to long shoots such as sports events and wedding days where you are going to have the camera up to your eye for hours at a time.

The Sony G Master also boasts additional special lens elements compared to the original: 1x XA (extreme aspherical), 2x ED (extra-low dispersion), 2x Super ED and 1x ED Aspherical (newly developed). This impressive list guarantees suppressed chromatic aberration and reduced focus breathing, as well as improves focus and axis shift while zooming.

The inclusion of four XD Linear Motors makes the autofocus approximately 4x faster than the Mark I. Plus, the autofocus tracking has been improved by 30%; that brings the AF to a whole new level of responsiveness that is going to be so useful for photographers.

Enjoy incredible imagery with bright contrast and clarity owing to Sony’s new Nano AR Coating II. This coating effectively minimises any glare and ghosting so that even on bright days your images will pack a punch.

Who is this lens for?

This is going to make a fantastic lens for a whole host of photographers. Sports, Wildlife, Portraits, Weddings, Performance, Macro – you name it, this lens can do it! Not just specialising in still photography, the Sony 70-200mm lens is also excellent for videography owing to a number of focusing improvements such as reduced focus breathing and improved focus and axis shift while zooming.

Always popular, the 70-200mm focal range is well-loved for good reason. At the wide end, it is still able to get a fairly wide angle of view, including the 85mm range that works very well for portraiture. Running up to 200mm this telephoto lens provides an extremely useful zoom that makes shooting in a fast-paced environment smooth as silk. Not to mention the fact that the F2.8 aperture is fixed throughout the entire focal range so that no matter what you are shooting, you do not need to worry about altering the settings.

First thoughts and availability

This looks to be a beast of a lens that weighs as light as a feather. Just by looking through the specs, there doesn’t seem to be a single area that Sony hasn’t covered. The improvements are certainly significant enough to warrant a trade-in of the Mark I – if only just for that reduction in weight. I can see the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 proving very popular among the vast majority of professional Sony Mirrorless shooters.
