Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art Lens
Introducing Sigma’s new state-of-the-art 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art Lens, built specifically for the L-Mount and Sony E-Mount full-frame mirrorless camera systems. It wholly embraces Sigma’s Art line concept; ‘designed with a focus on sophisticated optical performance’. It is a versatile 35mm prime lens, perfect for travel, wedding, portrait and astrophotography as well as film-making.
Made with Craftsmanship
Sigma’s 35mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art lens first came out in 2012. Now, with the mirrorless camera market growing, Sigma has developed the DG DN for L-Mount and E-Mount mirrorless systems. Manufactured at its own sole factory in Japan, the level of craftsmanship that has gone into developing the optics of this lens is outstanding. Read here on our blog to take a deeper look into how Sigma lenses are made.
Spectacular Optics
The 35mm F1.4 DG DN lens is built up of 15 elements in 11 groups including two Special Low Dispersion (SLD), an Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD), an ‘F’ Low Dispersion (FLD) and two aspherical elements. These special lenses, as well as other high-performance glass used in the construction, combine to minimise any aberration, including axial chromatic aberration. As a result, the image quality is sharp, high-contrast and true-to-sight.
Durable, Splash-Proof Design
This lens has been built to last long-term professional use. The lens is dust and splash-proof with sealings on buttons and along the joins, as well as a rubber gasket around the camera mount. The front element has also been coated with water and oil repellent substances for use in harsher conditions. Included with the lens is a petal lens hood which offers extra protection if dropped and reduces flare. The hood locks securely into place and its rubberised grip makes it easy to remove and attach.
Perfect for Portraits
A 35mm has always been a top pick for portrait and wedding photographers and this Sigma Art Lens is no different. Thanks to the 11 rounded diaphragm blades, the lens creates smooth, round bokeh with a shallow depth of field that is perfect for portrait photography. The artist can get creative knowing that this lens will produce pin-sharp image quality and minimal colour bleeding even in backlit scenes due to Sigma’s anti-ghosting and anti-flare technology.
Fast Auto Focus, Smooth Manual Focus
Sigma has opted for a Stepping Motor (STM) for this new Art lens to create a responsive but quiet focusing system. An AF/MF focus mode switch is built into the side of the body. When in manual focus the focus ring is smooth and precise, yet still has the resistance for the requirements of videographers.
Bright Aperture
The incredible F1.4 aperture means this wide-angle lens takes bright images with high contrast, even in low-light conditions. It is also able to control sagittal coma flare, even at F1.4, which stops bright lights flaring at the edges of the images. Being able to open the lens so wide and not needing to worry about flare compliments any astrophotographers looking for a new high-quality built lens.
A Lightweight Travel Companion
Weighing only 645g, this is the most compact and lightweight 35mm prime lens currently on the market. Despite its power, it fits neatly onto any mirrorless camera and does not look out of place on some of the more compact models. Additionally, it is only 109.5mm in length so will fit into even the most packed camera bags. For all these reasons, it is a perfect option for travel photographers and videographers after a versatile prime lens.
Professional Features
Built into the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art Lens is an aperture lock switch that allows the aperture to be locked when and cannot be accidentally knocked during shooting. Not just a photographer’s lens, this 35mm also allows the aperture ring to be de-clicked so that during the film-making process exposure can smoothly be adjusted. Additionally, on the lens barrel, Sigma has added an AFL button that can communicate customised settings from in-camera (depending on camera model).
