Panasonic LUMIX S1 Mirrorless Camera with 24-105mm f4 Lens
First plugged at Photokina 2018, the LUMIX S1 and S1R are Panasonic's venture into the full-frame mirrorless market. They are the world’s first mirrorless full-frame cameras to feature Dual Image Stabilisation as well as 4k 60P/50P video.
The S1 provides superb light compensation per pixel and gives a wide dynamic range. The latest Venus Engine has been configured to work perfectly with this full-frame camera. The engine, combined with Multi-Pixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing will give you natural and high-resolution images. Three-dimensional Colour Controls will enhance the reproduction of colour in shadows and bright areas of your photographs. The supercharged 24-megapixel sensor and engine give realistic detail in low to high-sensitivity settings. Taking photos in low-lighting situations is easy. Your images can be produced with minimal noise even when shooting at its maximum level of ISO51200.
What's great about the LUMIX S Series?
- Features a 35 mm full-frame image sensor (approx. 47M for the S1R and 24M for the S1)
- Supporting 4K 60p/50p video recording makes this a 'world first' for full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras
- Bringing Dual Image Stabilization as seen in the Lumix G9, into the full frame mirrorless market
- Dual slots giving support for XQD and SD memory cards
- A rugged triaxial tilt LCD gives convenient flexibility and peace of mind in challenging environments
- The L-Mount opens this camera to a range of the finest Leica Camera and Sigma Lenses
Superb imaging and dual stabilisation on the Lumix S cameras
Combining its Body Image Stabilizer with 5.5-stop compensation, the Lumix S couples the Body's 5-axis IS system with the 2-axis optical IS found in the Lumix S Lens series. The result of this is 6 stop 5 axis Dual Image Stabilisation. The 5-axis dual IS counters heavy movements which would not usually be manageable. This design is very beneficial when shooting in difficult settings. Particularly with any telephoto shooting, in low lighting or when working one-handed with 6-stop slower shutter speeds.
High-Resolution Mode gives you the option to take intensely highly detailed images up to 187MP on the S1R and up to 96 MP on the S1. The camera captures 8 images consecutively, the sensor is then shifted using the body IS mechanism. This is then incorporated into a single RAW image file, giving impressive detail to your images. This mode is great for shooting landscapes in nature or capturing the finer details in works of art. By switching the camera's sub-mode, makes this possible in scenes with moving subjects.
HLG Photo mode gives you a broad range of dynamic ways to reproduce light and shadows with great levels of natural contrast. HLG Photos can be transferred into HSP files with compressed high-brightness signals. These images can then be viewed on Panasonic HLG 4K TVs using an HDMI cable or other HLG devices.
Shoot high-speed objects with the High Precision Shutter unit. The unit provides maximum shutter speeds of up to 1/80000 second and gives the ability to shoot with high-speed lenses with fully open apertures, even outside. You can synchronise the external flash to work with shutter speeds at a max of 1/320 second.
How powerful is the autofocus on the Panasonic Lumix S series?
The Lumix S series cameras boast Super fast 0.8s Autofocus with incredible precision. The lens and the sensor communicate up to 480fps, and the camera will combine contrast AF detection with DFD technology to give AF speeds of 0.08 seconds.
The cameras perform outstandingly in low-lit scenes. Thanks to heightened sensitivity and a finely tuned sensor, they boast -6EV luminance detection.
Advanced AI Technology Will pick up on a range of detailed, specific subjects. The camera can detect and track humans and fast-moving animals, even when their backs are turned.
Video performance on the Lumix S series
Capture 4k Video in 60p/50p, plus a full-pixel readout of signals and a crop factor of 1.0x in 30p/25p. This will allow you to capture stunning video with no time limit in both Full-HD, 4K 30p/25p and High Dynamic Range recording. The S1 will comply with 4:2:2 10-bit 4K 30p/25p internal video recording, 4K 60p/50p HDMI output and V-Log with a software upgrade key (not included).
High speed video capture will record slow-motion video in 4K (max. 60 fps / 50fps) and FHD (max. 180 fps / 150fps).
Superb viewfinder
With the largest in class Real Viewfinder, these cameras hold the title (at launch) for the world's highest 5,760k-dot resolution. They feature a 0.78x magnification ratio which is adjustable to 0.7x or 0.74x for varying styles and environments. A high speed, precise OLED for the LVF gives a clear display at a switchable 60 fps / 120 fps. With high-speed response and a minimum time lag of under 0.005 sec plus 10,000:1 levels of high contrast which will give you the perfect view of your subject.
What Lens Mount is on the LUMIX S1 and S1R?

Practical and rugged
Built to last, the S1 and S1R are carefully constructed with professional photographers and heavy users in mind. Built from a magnesium alloy full die cast to the front and rear frame, the structure will withstand heavy usage. With weather sealing across all key elements - every dial button and joint are carefully crafted to be dust and splash resistant. The camera has also been tested to work at temperatures as low as -10° Celcius. The cameras are built with an estimated shutter life of approx. 400,000 cycles.
A Dual Memory Card Slot will take SD Memory Cards (UHS-II) and XQD Memory cards. Plans of future compatibility with CFexpress are also on the horizon from Panasonic.
Review of the Panasonic S1 from Clifton Cameras
The Panasonic S1 should be considered by all demanding professional content creators looking for a full-frame mirrorless solution to their video content creation and photographic needs.
Just the 5.760k dot electronic viewfinder alone, the highest resolution available, warrants a peek before making a decision.
It is a heavy camera to travel with and you certainly notice the weight of it after a long day of shooting but if you’re willing to cope with the additional weight you will be rewarded with better results.
I know I’ve found a great camera when I come to review my results and I have a difficult time selecting my favourite images. I always come away with a small selection of photos I’m happy on most any camera but it is rare that I feel spoilt for choice. The Panasonic S1 definitely spoiled me.
