Kowa BD II 10x42 XD Binoculars | Clifton Cameras
The third generation in the BD line-up, the new BDII XD take over from the popular BD XD range. The latest version has been designed to be ‘Affordable without compromise’, Kowa’s philosophy when designing and making these optics.
The legendary XD lenses used in these binoculars are not just any ED glass. The glass featured is high resolution extra low dispersion glass containing large amounts of the mineral fluorite crystal. Fluorite crystal is the best material available to optical makers offering unchallenged light transmission, edge to edge definition and zero chromatic aberration. All these offer a sharp, high contrast image most other optics in this price range simply can not offer.
The BD II series now offer some series optical features besides the XD glass. The first is the amazing wide angle performance through the whole range. The highlight model would be the new addition to the BD family, the 6.5x32. The field of view from these new optics is 10 degrees or 175m at 1000m. The 6.5x32 also offers a close focus distance of just 1.3m, good enough to see the laces on your shoes. Combining these features, as well as weighing just 535g, means the 6.5x model is perfect for butterflies, insects, dragon flies and even flowers.
The regular 8x32 and 10x32 models offer a very good field of view at 8.8 and 6.7 degrees respectively along with the incredible 1.3m close focusing. The popular 8x42 setup will give you 8.2 degrees, 1.8m close focus and weighing in at 640g.
Each binocular has a rugged and lightweight magnesium alloy construction. They can tolerate the severst conditions whilst providing the user security and comfort in use.
The dry nitrogen use in the binoculars will prevent the binoculars from fogging and keep the binoculars fully water proof. The KR coating on the external side of the lenses will protect them from dirt and other types of residue that build-up over general use.
To help with comfort you having soft twist up eyecups and a positive grip on the focus wheel. The rubber armor offers operation with or without gloves and retains the grip in all conditions. The shape and handle have been designed to make sure the ergonomics ensure these can be used all day, everyday.
In the box you will received a soft carry case, rainguard, objective covers and soft neoprene style neck strap.
What our experts say:
The Kowa BD range as been improving over the years and the XD series proved they can compete, or even better, other offers in the mid-range binocular market. Some see Kowa as a scope brand but trust me they now have some mid-range binoculars that are right up there with the best available. Having tried the 6.5x32 in the field, I can say these are truly a joy to use. I rarely use higher than 8x so having something in this lower magnification is just what I look for. Okay, not ideal for medium to long distance birding having such a wide field of view but for walking, nature reserves, bugs and butterflies these are perfect. Knowing the other options in this price range I would have to say the BD II XD’s offer the best optical performance available.
