The New Fujifilm X-T4
Not content with the Fujifilm X100V launch earlier this month, Fuji has now brought us the brand new X-T4 on February 26 2020. We can expect the usual image quality that we’ve come to know and love but we’re also seeing some huge additions and improvements in this latest generation X-Series mirrorless camera.
The Ultimate Handheld Digital Camera
Introducing 5-axis in-body image stabilization for creating the smoothest video and stable stills. The Fujifilm XT4 provides up to 6.5 stops of image stabilisation when paired with 18 of their compatible 29 XF lenses. Combine this with the new four-axis Digital Image Stabiliser and you’ve got the ultimate handheld stills and movie-making machine.
Reliable and Long Lasting
For the serious image taker, having a camera body that can be relied upon is essential. The improved mechanical shutter in the X-T4 is Fujifilm’s most robust and fastest in the history of the X-Series line-up.
Capable of 15fps and rated at 300,000 actuations you are safe in the knowledge that this camera is built to see you through the most vigorous shooting situations. Combine the robust inner workings with the introduction of the new larger and longer-lasting battery and you’ve got an incredibly durable partnership.
Utilising the new NP-W235 battery the X-T4 is capable of 500 frames on one single charge, this can be boosted to 600 if the camera is placed in economy mode. Go one step further and add the vertical battery grip that houses a further two batteries and you can expect to produce around 1700 shots per charge.
Cover Every Angle
A notable upgrade from the Fujifilm X-T3 is the introduction of the 1.62mil dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD. Completely change the way you capture your stills and movies by being able to see your shot from any angle. If shooting from the LCD screen isn’t required then tuck it away and continue your creativity with the updated 3.69mil dot Electronic Viewfinder.
Updated Ergonomics
In order to house the larger battery and the new LCD vari-angle screen, the size and weight of the body have been made to be slightly bulkier than its predecessor. This isn’t necessarily a negative as the X-T4 still feels comfortable and safe whilst being held one-handed. The X-T4 is slightly wider but still only comes with an increase of 68g over the X-T3.
Tell Your Story in a Different Way
The X-T4 comes with more movie-making magic than ever before. With a dedicated switch to flip between stills and movie mode, you’ll find yourself totally immersed in whichever method of recording you choose. Silently control your filming from the LCD touchscreen and utilise the dedicated movie Q menu to make your workflow more efficient.
Record professional-level 4K up to 60fps and slow things down by 10x with Full HD 120p movie recording. The newly introduced Digital Image Stabilisation aids the handheld videographer whilst the introduction of Mp4 format allows you to download your movies to a smart device - perfect for those quick edits for social media.
It's also possible to record F-Log footage in 10-bit internally. In addition to this, the innovative AF-C subject tracking can operate in low-light conditions down to -6EV. The dual-memory card slow can also be used to act as a back-up system whilst you’re filming.
Autofocus Upgrades
Key improvements with the X-T4’s AF are crucial in a competitive market. The face detection has been improved by 83% and eye detection has been improved by 34%, giving an overall success rate of around 80%. These changes put the X-T4 on par if not better than the current competition.
New Film Simulation Mode
We’re all fully aware of the incredible colour science that Fujifilm brings to the market and the X-T4 brings another new film simulation mode to the mix, the ETERNA Bleach Bypass. This creates a beautiful, de-saturated, high-contrast look that almost any image taker will find irresistible.
What do we think of the Fujifilm X-T4?
Having spent some time with the X-T4 we can safely say that’s it’s a fantastic upgrade for anybody looking for a hybrid camera in a very competitive market. The very fact that you are able to shoot professional level video handheld is an excellent option for the creative that shoots on the go.
Ergonomically, the slight extra weight and width pose no obstruction to long uses and thanks to the upgraded battery, you really can step out with the X-T4 and shoot to your heart's content. With the ability to quickly charge from USB-C, you’ll need to carry fewer cables and spares if you’re taking this camera on your adventures.
Whilst Fujifilm operates in the APS-C domain, the X-T4 still poses a threat to it’s larger, full-frame competition. Being able to shoot effectively in low-light, record professional-level 4K whilst coming with useful fixtures and fittings such as Face and Eye AF, flip-out LCD screen and a super bright and clear EVF, the X-T4 is putting itself firmly in the driving seat for many creatives.
