Sue Flood - Zambia

April 2013 - ZAMBIA

I've recently returned from a month-long shoot to Africa - and had some wonderful wildlife opportunities whilst staying at The Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge in the South Luangwa Valley, Zambia. I've had several trips to Mfuwe Lodge over the last few years and love it - fabulous wildlife, fabulous people and fabulous camps. I regularly guide photography trips there for Steppes Discovery so if you fancy brushing up your photo skills, whether you're a complete beginner or a more experienced photographer, I'd love you to join me!

I had with me my trusty Canon Eos 1DS Mk III and my recently acquired Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body, along with my Canon EF 300mm f2.8L IS II USM Lens and Canon EF 600mm f4.0L USM IS II Lens, both of which I love - not least when I'm driving around in a safari vehicle rather than carrying them in a rucksack!

On one game drive the light was perfect for photographing a stunning saddle-billed stork fishing at the water's edge. and I used my Canon EF 600mm f4.0L USM IS II Lens on my Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body to freeze the action as the water dripped from its striking beak.

One afternoon, we were lucky to get a close sighting of a young leopard, on the edge of a clearing - about 5 metres from our vehicle, and I was able to get a shot with my lovely new Canon EF 300mm f2.8L IS II USM Lens - beautiful cat, shame about the annoying foliage in the foreground! Look at those lovely sharp whiskers!

Finally, was able to put my Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body and Canon EF 600mm f4.0L USM IS II Lens (succeeded by Canon EF 600mm f4L IS III USM Lens) to good use in a low light situation on a night drive when I spotted this lovely African civet, sloping along at the side of the road whilst hunting for prey.
