The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K is a fully customisable full-frame cinema camera with a 6K sensor that delivers natural skin tones and rich colours. The Blackmagic PYXIS makes digital film camera quality available to indie filmmakers, content creators and online video with professional features, cinematic colour science, intuitive controls, and DaVinci Resolve Studio for post, all in one affordable package.

Build the perfect camera rig

Customise as you desire, with the camera’s versatile modular design allowing you to build the ideal rig for any production situation. It features a 36 x 24mm sensor with a wide dynamic range and a built-in optical low pass filter matched to the sensor. It has dual CFexpress media recorders and can record 12-bit Blackmagic RAW and small H.264 proxy files simultaneously. 

The camera is compatible with the Blackmagic URSA electronic viewfinder, has extensive pro connections including 12G-SDI with HDR for monitoring, mini XLR with phantom power, 3.5mm mic input, timecode in, reference input, headphones, and a DC power input, as well as side plates to expand rigging options further. 

With multiple mounts and accessory plates, the PYXIS can be configured into any camera setup. The standard plate has 1/4" and 3/8" threads to add mics, brackets, and more, while the SSD plate securely attaches a USB-C drive or phone making it perfect for live streaming.

With the same advanced generation 5 colour science as URSA cameras, PYXIS captures richer colours, finer details, and a wide dynamic range between highlights and shadows for that true cinematic look. 

PYXIS includes the full DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing, professional colour correction, audio post and VFX. The new cut page simplifies and speeds up editing so you can find, assemble and output footage faster. Combined with DaVinci's legendary colour grading tools, PYXIS offers an end-to-end cinematic workflow from camera to delivery. Now independent filmmakers can enjoy the same software used by Hollywood professionals. 

Load custom 3D LUTs

The PYXIS has an intuitive operating system with tap and swipe controls, similar to other Blackmagic cameras for easy transition between models on set. You get full manual control over focus, exposure, 3D LUTs, HDR, metadata and more. 

3D LUTs can be applied to the monitor to give you an idea of how the footage will look after processing, working with industry-standard 17 and 33-point 3D LUT files. You can also record them in the Blackmagic RAW file so that you can use them in post-production.

Blackmagic RAW files

Blackmagic RAW preserves the sensor data, eliminates quality problems and saves your camera settings as metadata so you can access ISO, white balance and exposure in-camera or override them later during editing. Useful data that is recorded includes colour temperature, contrast, ISO, tint, saturation, and exposure. 

Flexible full-frame shooting

The large full-frame sensor in the Blackmagic PYXIS camera allows you to work with different film formats and aspect ratios without compromising on quality. Shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD up to DCI 4K and even 6K. 

Utilising the full sensor area provides a unique open gate 3:2 image that enables reframing shots in post-production. The camera can shoot up to 36 fps at 6048 x 4032 3:2 open gate or 60 fps at 6048 x 2520 2.4:1 and 60 fps at 4096 x 2160 4K DCI. 

The large sensor also permits shooting in true 6:5 anamorphic format at high resolutions, capturing 4.8K 24 fps at 4832 x 4032 and resulting in more detailed widescreen cinematics. You can even use the classic Super 35-sized window on the sensor to instantly create a close-up version of your shot that seamlessly matches the open gate footage, shooting up to 100 fps at 2112 x 1184 Super 16. You can even shoot 120 fps in 1080HD. 

24.6MP Stills Shooting

In addition to shooting video, the Blackmagic PYXIS can also capture high-resolution 24.6-megapixel stills. Simply press the dedicated stills button to record images as Blackmagic RAW for very high image quality, perfect for professional prints or later editing in DaVinci Resolve. This method of capturing stills is great for ensuring continuity between shots or remotely sharing an individual frame. 

A master of light

Dynamic range measures the difference, in stops, between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. The Blackmagic PYXIS’ 13 stops of dynamic range display its exceptional ability to retain detail in the brightest and darkest levels of cinematography. 

For example, this lets you balance indoor videography exposure with an influx of outdoor light coming through a window while capturing high levels of detail throughout. You also get more colours than the standard DCI-P3 colourspace used for movies. 

Plus DaVinci Resolve Studio provides total creative freedom with full exposure adjustment and recovery controls when colour grading. 

Blackmagic PYXIS has dual native ISO up to 25,600, optimised to minimise grain or noise in images while maintaining the sensor's full dynamic range. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is suited to filming in dimly lit settings, and the native ISO of 400 is designed for when you have on-set lighting to work with. 

Full viewing, full control

Blackmagic PYXIS has a logical layout that positions important controls like ISO, white balance, and shutter speed within easy reach. Both the touchscreen and physical buttons provide quick access with a user-friendly interface and ergonomic placement. A scroll wheel enables swift adjustments, while three customisable function keys let you bypass hunting through menus on the small screen, instantly accessing go-to settings such as frame rate, focus, zoom, and false colour. These settings can also be locked to give a consistent look to your shots. 

The built-in 4-inch HDR touchscreen on Blackmagic PYXIS allows for framing and focusing your shots in full HD resolution without needing an external monitor. You can also use the screen as a focus assist station. As an HDR display with 1500 nits of brightness, you can view your shot or adjust settings even in direct sunlight. On-screen overlays show status info, histograms, levels, guides, and more. You can even quickly apply 3D LUTs to keep track of a shot’s desired colour and look.

Post-production heaven

Blackmagic PYXIS records in Blackmagic RAW to preserve control of detail, exposure and colour during post-production. It also records HD H.264 proxies in real time making it easy to share media worldwide in minutes. The 12-bit gamma curve preserves more colour data from the sensor to the final image, resulting in natural, film-like colour renditions when colour-graded in post. 

To improve post-production workflows several options for capturing your creations have been included. You can record to internal storage media or an external USB-C flash disk, select and upload clips to Blackmagic Cloud, or record into DaVinci Resolve. 

Sync your workflow

By recording H.264 proxy files alongside the camera's original high-resolution media, the smaller proxy files can be uploaded rapidly to Blackmagic Cloud, perfect for editors to access media from the studio in real time. The transfer of footage directly into the DaVinci Resolve media pool while editors are working is groundbreaking for workflow, letting any remote editors get immediate access to shots straight from the set. If shooting with multiple PYXIS cameras, DaVinci Resolve's multi-cam editing tools on the Cut page will display each angle in a multi-view. Timecode input will allow multi-cam shoots to remain perfectly in sync, connecting an external timecode generator to the BNC input. In post, DaVinci Resolve will automatically find and sync the shots from all cameras so you don't have to waste time sorting and syncing thousands of clips.

Built-in live streaming

With live streaming, the entire post team to monitor the shoot live as it happens. You can live stream directly from film sets using the built-in streaming engine in the PYXIS, supporting RTMP and SRT protocols for streaming to YouTube, Facebook and more. Connection to the internet can be achieved via wired ethernet or a 4G/5G mobile device. The stream status and data rate are visible on the PYXIS viewfinder and LCD. To create a wireless video link back to the studio, you can stream to a Blackmagic ATEM Streaming Bridge which decodes the H.264 stream back to baseband video. 

Professional audio

The Blackmagic PYXIS not only has high-quality audio recording capabilities built right in but features a mini XLR input with 48V phantom power, granting you audio options such as a Lavalier or boom mic. The built-in microphones have a low noise floor, are shock and wind-resistant, and capture great sound, making them perfect for recording guide audio on location. The 3.5mm input for connecting video camera mics, built-in speaker for playback, and 3.5mm headphone jack provide full adaptability for your audio needs.

Connect, control and record

The Blackmagic PYXIS camera provides extensive wireless control options for flexible positioning. You can utilize Bluetooth to adjust settings from up to 30 feet away using Blackmagic's app or compatible third-party apps on iOS and Android devices. Blackmagic even offers a free software developer kit on the Blackmagic Design developer website to create custom control and slating solutions, like timecode and trigger syncing between cameras. 

The USB-C Expansion Port enables 5 Gb/s speeds for attaching external drives and flash media. This allows you to record for longer durations and easily move footage to your computer for instant editing and colour correction, skipping file transfer. You can also utilise the built-in Ethernet port for network control via APIs and file copying.

Dual CFexpress card slots provide robust, high-speed storage for capturing full 12-bit Blackmagic RAW 6K video and provide the option for hot-swapping when continuous recording is needed. The fast CFexpress media is durable and allows for the recording of over an hour of 6K footage on a 256GB card. The speed also makes the cards ideal for direct editing from the card on your computer with the included DaVinci Resolve Studio software. 

Stay powered up

The Blackmagic PYXIS camera utilises high-performance BP-U batteries, capable of over 3 hours of continuous shooting. There are also many battery adapters and chargers from third-party manufacturers, so you'll never be caught with a dead battery. 

For DC power, a locking power connector ensures uninterrupted power, perfect for when your camera is out of reach on a mount or jib. The PYXIS also includes international power adapters for use anywhere in the world.
